Abstract

|
Probiotics are defined as the live microorganisms which have a beneficial effect for disease prevention and health promotion when provided in sufficient amounts. As recently, global use of probiotic products including functional foods containing probiotic bacteria has increased significantly, the probiotics use is also raising fast in Korea, and the report of cases related with such products¡¯ adverse effects and presumed adverse events have been increased during the past two years. Considering that probiotics are live microorganisms that can influence the human immune system, several theoretical risks need to be evaluated. These include systemic infections such as bacteremia, sepsis, deleterious metabolic activities in susceptible individuals, gene transfer, and gastrointestinal side effects. More research and optimal surveillance are needed to properly evaluate the adverse events related to probiotics and to improve the adequate use of probiotics.
